I wish to inform you that the Vatican announced this morning that Pope Francis has appointed Archbishop Joseph W. Tobin the Archbishop of Newark, New Jersey. He will be installed on January 6, 2017. He succeeds Archbishop John J. Myers, who is retiring. Archbishop Tobin will be holding a press conference today at 10:30 a.m. in Newark.

Archbishop Tobin was informed of the appointment to Newark on October 22 by Archbishop Christophe Pierre, the Apostolic Nuncio to the United States.  While this certainly comes as quite a shock and will be a huge loss for the Catholic Church in Central and Southern Indiana, Archbishop Tobin's outstanding leadership skills and many talents will without a doubt be a great blessing for the Archdiocese of Newark.
